The history of London's buses started
in 1829 when George Shillibeer opened the first omnibus route from
Paddington Station to Bank. Within the next years many more omnibus
companies were founded. The "London General Omnibus Company" was
to become the biggest of them. In 1910 the LGOC introduced the
B-Type motor omnibus, the first mass-manufactured motor omnibus.
The motor bus design changed rapidly between 1920 and 1930. In 1932
AEC introduced the revolutionary Q-Type with the engine mounted on
the offside, thus being the grandfather of all modern motor buses.
In 1933 the London Passenger Transport Board, better known as London
Transport, was founded and brought together all public transport
companies to form the biggest transport undertaking in the world. |
