Throughout the 1960s the Routemaster reigned supreme in London even though the first modern rear-engined one-man operated buses started their service in London. The 1970s brought many new classes and lots of problems with the new technologies so unfamiliar to London Transport.
In 1978 the Leyland Titan was to be the last bus designed with a heavy input by London Transport's engineers, all the bus classes from then on were "off the peg"-designs to be found in many british cities. Privatisation of London's bus services brought the end to London Transport in the 1980s
In 1999 the new London transport authority demanded that every new bus ordered for service in London has to be low-floor. The new low-floor double-deckers are splendid vehicles built to a very high design standard. And still the Routemaster soldiers on... |
