The outbreak of war in 1939 had an enormous effect on London's public transport. Bus services were to be reduced considerably, Green Line services ceased in September 1939 but were reinstalled later albeit in very reduced form.

The blackout was imposed immediately and all headlamps had to be masked. The roofs on all vehicles were painted in dark colours and all vehicles working routes to strategically important targets were camouflaged in grey. After some accidents all vehicles received white markings on the corners and the entrances or platforms. Motor buses received an additional white point at the rear. Trolleybuses did not have this point to prevent trolleybus drivers from attempting to overtake another trolleybus.

London Transport turned to direct production for the war effort and one of the many contributions was the production of Handley Page Halifax bombers. 1.300 London Transport Staff members were killed in World War 2.

In 1942 the ministry of supplies allowed completion of several chassis that were produced before the outbreak of war due to a severe shortage of vehicles. These chassis were completed with wartime standard bodies ("utility buses") built to a very basic design.
